As part of Norwich Fashion Week NUA held a Fashion Showcase . I found this event very inspiring it gave me the opportunity to listen to the designers and creators and also to look/photograph their work.
The speakers where Beatrice Korlekie Newman , Daniel Harris and Nick Thompson, co-founder of Knit, an award winning creative agency based in Norwich
I was also able to look at work from other students from NUA including Textiles and Fashion students.
Photograph – Dashing tweeds Daniel Harris – London Cloth Company
I found Daniel Harris talk very interesting as I have very little experience of weaving, he explained how he had learned to weave as he had wanted to make a suit from a piece of cloth he had woven himself (he was a tailor), we saw his first piece of weaving ( this piece of weaving gave me hope) this has led him to buy numerous old looms which he has restored. Daniel now runs the London Cloth Company specialising in using British yarns creating unique cloth.
Beatrice Korlekie Newman
Beatrice explained how she started her fashion brand “Korlekie” and her journey from knitwear student to fashion designer and the experiences along the way.
I found Beatrice very inspiring , I was very interested to see her design process and how she combines drawing styles in her initial designs. I was also very interested in her use of 3D images to create designs for collection. This is something I am very keen to try in my next project.
Learning to take forward …
Weaving – everyone has to start somewhere I must learn to use the loom before I leave NUA.
Sketch book – Seeing how the fashion students display there research sketch book- experiment with different methods
Use of 3D images – Experiment with creating patterns to transfer into knit/crochet
